But I think until/unless the developer falls a bit in love with his old stomping ground we might not have that opportunity. Something like a small gofundme or something and pay for the rights for an API implementation/redesign, for the libraries controlling the various objects/units in the game which could allow a modding community like Tynan's game Rimworld, but that's just my two cents.
As it happens the game is a pretty solid if somewhat limited game, to your point it sort of screams for a mod oriented patch that would allow Martino to take a more hands off approach and let the fan-base have some design fun.
I suspect there's enough enthusiasm to get some interesting mods if that were an option.
This program allows game users to easily create new challenges without programming knowledge.
