[LEGACY] Random Appearance Button

Description
This is the vanilla version.
WOTC is here: http://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1215679398

This mod adds a Random Appearance button (which makes default-looking soldiers and is configurable) and a Totally Random button (if you want to make zany clown soldiers). It has a set of checkboxes to lock traits, as depicted in the screenshots. It also has an Undo with a limited buffer, in case you click too quickly.

NOTE (2017.09.22) I finally have my system up and running again, and I'm getting my dev environment back up and running. I can't commit to a time table, unfortunately, but I'm gearing up to try and fix stuff. I understand a lot of mods are now forking to handle the new and old stuff...I'm going to try and not do that, but we'll see.

Check off the attributes you want to lock (prevent from changing) then click a button to roll the dice. The panel is hidden by default; click the Toggle Options button to reveal and rehide them.

* The Random Appearance button * generates a 'reasonable looking soldier' as requested by users. Most of the chances are based on the game's default chances for props, but these are all configurable in XComRandomAppearanceButton.ini if you'd like to tweak them.

That file ought to be here: ...\Steam\SteamApps\workshop\content\268500\634268994\Config

* The Totally Random button * does just what it says and will result in clowns at least half of the time. (It will respect the checkboxes.)

* The Undo button * will rollback the effects of the mod's buttons as well as any manual edits you make to generated appearances; it will NOT respect the checkboxes and will only undo appearances generated by the mod and manual modifications to those generated appearances.

* * * CAVEATS * * *

The Undo button will always ignore the checkboxes, because it's an Undo and respecting the checkboxes wouldn't rollback...it would generate a new appearance.

Note that - just as the default UI is - this mod is constrained by whatever armor your soldier is wearing prior to coming into Customization.

Despite my efforts, I can't get Undo to work unless you've already generated an appearance with the mod itself. I'll keep trying, but for now them's the brakes.

VOICE isn't currently rolled for. Some have requested this so I've looked into it, and honestly I still don't see it happening, primarily because I could never guarantee the kind of support I have for prop packs (e.g. Capnbubs) for voice packs, which would be super lame.

ATTITUDE isn't currently rolled for, and this is a weird one since if it *was* rolled for you'd never see it on the Customization screen: recall that the soldier's forced into a By-the-Book attitude stance on this screen no matter what, so you can see your prop changes easily. So, probably I'll never add this one either.

GENDER. Switching the soldier's gender effectively generates a new soldier, preserving the settings for the previous gender; this is just how XCOM 2 handles it, not the mod. You can freely toggle between genders: each keeps their own distinct looks. (Not much benefit here but no harm, as far as I can tell.) You can also Undo gender changes (but note that this will not persist your uniform changes *backwards*.) I did for a time experiment with persisting random appearances across clicks of the Toggle Gender button which I did like BUT really ran into a brickwall: some props (e.g. Hairstyles) don't exist for both genders, so when switching between them, where do we go? I can't answer that question in a way that satisfies me, haha. So, that's where I am with that.

* * * KNOWN COMPATIBILITIES * * *

So far, I've seen the mod work with mods that add props, tattoos, colors so I suspect any of them will work; below are ones I use myself on a regular basis, so I can confirm ongoing stability for them at least.

All Firaxis DLC. (No official DLC is required.)

Capnbubs Accessories Pack - also one of my personal favorites.

Military Camouflage Patterns - another of my personal favs.
http://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=619706632

Full Character Customization From Start.
http://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=620530611

Custom Face Paints
http://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=619525059

Free the Hood (allows the deep hood and similar hats to be coupled with upper and lower face props freely).
http://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=625349228

Menace Tattoo Pack
http://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=620514823

Ink and Paint
http://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=620051852

Symmetrical Kevlar Arms mods: these ones get a lil weird once in a while, resulting in fem arms on male soldiers, even during the opening mission...but that's sufferable for symmetrical arms. Note that you'll need to adjust the INI if you want these arms to be used by the Random Apperance button. (Totally Random will use them.)

Vivid Hair Colors

My other two mods work with it. :)

* * * INCOMPATIBILITIES * * *

Playable Advent

Reported, untested by me. To be honest with you all, playing "as advent" doesn't interest me in the slightest, so I'm not going to put in dozens of coding hours (or more) to try and get mine compatible with it; sorry. <3

Character Pool Uniforms

This mod overrides UICustomize *and* UICustomize_Menu. This would take me a LOT of effort to get compatibility, and to maintain it, which I just don't have time for. :( I'm sorry.

* * * KNOWN ISSUES AND BUGS. * * *

VOICE PACKS DON'T ALWAYS LIKE IT. Some custom Voice Packs actually conflict with this mod, as reported by several users. No idea why (this mod doesn't touch voices). If it doesn't work for you, try loading it up without voice pack mods.

SLOW DOWN. The mod will experience some intense slowdown if you have a lot of mods that add props, or sometimes it will even if you don't. This is 'normal' but undesirable. I have managed some optimizations which do seem to speed things up considerably, but there's still a limit. It's just a bit higher now. :)

WHILE IN A SUBMENU. If you click one of the mod's buttons while editing a specific trait with the UI (e.g. if you're in the eye color chooser and click Random Appearance) it 1. won't change the appearance and 2. will likely kick the camera in the teeth and you'll be stuck at the submenu's zoom. WORKAROUND: don't do it. If you did it, back out (hit ESC) and dive back in. (I have no idea how to fix this, unfortunately.)

4:3 RESOLUTIONS. Some have reported that the mod doesn't always work for 4:3 resolutions, due to where the panel has been placed on screen. In my testing, the buttons are a little cut off...others have told me they just don't see the buttons. I suspect in those cases that the 4:3 setting is a red herring and that some other mod is to blame, but I can't know for sure.

PROPS THAT JUST DON'T GO TOGETHER. Some mods add new props that just don't work with props from other mods; my mod will still randomly plop them together sometimes because it's all about clipping and aesthetics, a nontrivial problem in computer science. Sorry. :) Use the lock checkboxes liberally! Or don't...sometimes I'll find some really interesting combos this way, especially with Free the Hood and Capnbubs. Tweak by hand! :)

How to make random characters "totally random" by default?

@thades thanks for replying! I didn't realize that I commented in the legacy one, but yes i am using the WotC one! :)

@kakorot411 also just incase, this is the Legacy version for non Wrath of the Chosen. So if you have Wrath of the Chosen, you need my other version of this mod to work at all.

Hi @kakorat411! I get it, when I play, I run tons of mods too, and debugging them is super frustrating. The short answer is: each of my XCOM mods (including this one) work with the UI classes which a LOT of mods tend to override..and if those classes are overriden, my mods straight up wont work (will silently and politely fail to appear at all) so anything that messes specifically with the soldier edit screens should be where you focus your suspicions, with a side of any complete overhauls. My mods definitely still work <3 I use em haha, and other folks do too. :)

I know this hasn't been commented on in a while, but I'm trying to get this mod to work, but I have a bunch of mods (-230) and it would take me forever to figure out which one is causing the issue, I was wondering if it was the load order of the mods that could be it and what order this one should be in. Thanks for any help.

Correct, controller's not supported by any of my mods: they assume mouse+KB (because controller support's a LOT of work and my time is very limited).

Can't select the options with a controller. Only with mouse it seems.. and since you can't use ccontroller+mouse

Please could you make it compatible for 21:9 screen ? Thanks
thades  [author] 8 Feb, 2018 @ 6:08am
@Gingerbread_Matt then it's either a screen res issue (what screen res are you using?) or a mod conflict (it's usually a mod conflict).

Whatever mods you have that add items, armor pieces, or change the armory UI in any way stand a good chance of tripping over mine...or rather, mine will just fail as I built it to step aside rather than fight with other mods. (Nobody wins in those fights, so it's best to not engage. ;) )

At some point the devs changed how mods load and are marked for loading...and so unchecking them doesn't necessarily actually turn the mod(s) off. Check out /XComGame/Config/DefaultModOptions.ini and you may see that the mods are still listed as "active" even tho you've unchecked them. Delete em all (every line in that file) then load the game back up with them unchecked and you may get to see my mod working finally. Then you can activate mods one by one til you find the one that conflicts.

I hope that helps!

@Gingerbread_Matt, this is the Legacy version...are you playing WOTC? You need the updated version to work with that.
