St. Nicholas' Church

Description
St. Nicholas' Church from Bratislava,(Slovakia).

St. Nicholas' Church in Bratislava is an orthodox church situated on the castle hill next to the Bratislava Castle. The church was built in 1661 by Paul Pálffy‘s (1589–1655) widow Countess Frances, née Khuen (died 1672). It is an early baroque building built on the place of original Gothic church below the Bratislava Castle. The church is consecrated to St. Nicholas, the patron of sailors. His statue is situated in the stone niche above the main entrance to the church.

Magyarul: Váraljai Szent Miklós templom Pozsony. Eredetileg gótikus stílusban épült, egyhajós, keletelt tengelyű, poligonális szentélyzáródású Szent Mihály templom állt a mai templom helyén. A 16. század közepén, a hirtelen megjelenő török katonai veszélyre tekintettel lebontották annak érdekében, hogy a pozsonyi vár jobban védhető legyen. Mai alakjában való újjáépítésére 1661-ben került sor.Ekkor Pálffy Pál nádor felesége, Khuen Franciska költségén, a korábbi alapok felhasználásával, korai barokk stílusban építették meg. A nyereg tetős, cseréppel fedett templom nyugati homlokzata oromfalas, itt emelkedik tetőgerince fölé egy kis, négyzetes harangtornya, hagymasisakkal. Déli homlokzatának közepén díszesen faragott kőkeretes kapu nyílik, fölötte a kőből faragott Pálffy-címerrel, fölötte pedig a templom védőszentjének szobrával. Szentélyéhez északon sekrestye kapcsolódik.
