Realistic Thrusters (offset forces, NPCs unaffected)

Description
First off, this mod is intended for people that want more realism and challenge to their world, it will change how you need to build ships and it will change how you control them if they're not balanced.

The game applies thruster force at center of mass, this mod changes that force to be applied at the individual thruster's positions instead.

Affects all thrusters (including modded ones).

NEW: Gets turned off for grids that are owned by NPC-only factions.
It does not get turned off for autopilot ships owned by players.
For details see the 23 May 2020 update in change notes tab.

You can force realistic thrusters on specific NPC ships by adding force-realistic-thrust in any ship controller's custom data on that grid.
The ship controller must be owned by the major owner of the grid for the tag to work (prevents players exploting it if they can board an NPC ship).
You can also force realistic thrusts on an entire NPC faction by adding force-realistic-thrust to the faction's private info (other text can be present).

The screenshot I posted indicates that the thruster visible there will cause the ship to rotate left, as opposed to going forward with the vanilla thruster forces.

Please note:
- Dampeners will be highly confused by this mod and there's nothing I can do to help that. Most of the time you'll need to turn them off in order for them to not screw your control even more.
Properly balanced ships will behave normally.

- Autopilot will not be able to fly ship properly if it's not balanced.

- Gyroscopes will help dampen the amount of torque an off-center thruster adds, but it's better to just balance thrusters to center of mass.

This mod is amazing! However, when using this mod I found that the process to balance a ship (i.e. aligning Center of Thrust with Center of Mass) became a guessing exercise, which made this mod more frustrating than fun for me. Is there a way to visualize the Center of Thrust of a grid to make the process of balancing a ship more intuitive and fun?

I've updated my fork of this excellent mod to include Digi's NPC filtering, adding per-ship overrides of 'how much realistic thrust offsets', and a configurable server default. https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2672726149

So you can make it opt-in, if none of your friends want to play hard mode but you do, by setting default=0% and adding realistic-thrust-100% to your cockpit's CustomData. Or set it to 40% if you want 60% of thrust applied to CoM so slightly unbalanced grids are less of an issue.

Would be great if thrusters knew how many % of their thrust is needed to balance

Player made stuff needs to be built balanced to be properly controlled by anyone or anything, that's kinda the point of the mod, to add that challenge in thrust geometry.

The reason NPCs are excluded is because they would get ineffective at flying as the ships are designed for the vanilla thrusters.

@Digi - Does this mod work with remote controlled AI by player? You know the mod that allows you to control ships like drones to fight battles for you while you sit in your mother ship sending out controlled AI drones to kill targets.

Have you ever thought to add a center of mass indicator like the aerodynamic mod? It's kind of annoying to have to download the Aerodynamic mod just to figure out how to balance a ship.

Hello, your mod is great, thanks for your work! I don't want to play the game without this mod anymore! But, I also use the physics mod with Aerodynamics. And I have a question: your engines have a realistic effect on the structure, but the blocks in the aerodynamic mode that create lift still affect the center of mass, and Because of this, an airplane, for example, can fly with one wing torn off and not experience any problems with stability.Could you make a patch for the aerodynamic mod so that it uses physics like in your mod? That would be amazing!

any chance that this screws with landinggears and rotors so epically that i can't fly with more than 5 things docked?
Digi  [créateur] 11 aout 2024 à 18h11
Nope, it's complicated to take control of thrusters to react to rotation and requires more math than I can understand (this mod's math is handled by the physics engine, I just tell it to add force at a position).

Also a mod already exists that does that: https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=660333966

Any plans to add differential thrust to this?
