- Change your camera settings to increase FOV
- Ensure you always have a defender on your team
- Always fill your boost to 100%, and use sparingly a little dab on the boost will help you regain control and pick up a small amount of speed
- Don't chase the ball, watch your team mates play and try and play the spaces
- Aim for the corners on long range shots and the ball will drop back nicely right infront of the goal for one of your teammates to pickup
- Rember to rocket jump, if your not then go through the game tutorial, its one of the most useful defending methods, and can get some nice goals aswell sometimes!
- Don't keep changing your tyres, you will get trophys for distance covered with the same set of tyres!
- Remeber to reverse; seems obvious but many players waste lots of time turning around...
- Practise lots, it takes time to get control of your vehicle!
- You dont need to hold accelerate when using rocket, giving you time to control your jump and take off.
- On kickoff aim to kick off center, so even if it does go against you it will not be in direct line with your goal allowing an easier salvage of the situation.
- Test which car works with you, they have slightly different properties and affect the ball contact differently. The large van can be good for defending, whilst the fast cars with a shallow front give a small lift to the ball helping you get harder shots to save.
- Use your handbrake, and tap boost to turn quickly if you have high speed, can be done in reverse aswell with a little more practise!

Rocket League can be played with both a controller and a Keyboard but which option gives you the edge over other gamers? After testing both devices thoroughly I can say I prefer the controller despite being a natural PC gamer. The controller gives you a lot more control over acceleration/deceleration and also mid air control. This is due to the Joystick being used for directional control rather than the WASD keys, and the ability to tweak the exact angle you want to rotate at in mid air or alternatively the direction you want to flip to “kick” the ball.

Don’t get me wrong the keyboard and mouse is still very playable, but it will take more time to get used to, and if your determined to be one of the top players of this amazing little game then you need to consider ordering a controller to give you added benefits.

The recommended controller for this game due to compatibility with Steam is an Xbox 360 USB Wired Controller. This is my personal preference as well as I find it has been ergonomically designed for driving style games in mind, whilst PS3 controllers tend to be preferred for sporting games.

Flying is a simple trick that will allow you to get to the ball first and is a very useful trick you should practise and master whether you play in defence or attack. It can be used for some amazing shots just as much as defending some amazing shots!

To fly right click once so you complete a single jump, and then using your controller or keyboard hold down (S) so your vehicle rotates upright and hit the boost button (left click). At the beginning this will be a difficult stunt to control but after a bit of practise you will master it; additionally as stated above the controller gives you optimum mid air control and the stunt can be performed slightly more easily.

Remember this is a team game, so play as a team player. We will discuss 3v3 as this is the main matchmaking mode. You should play based on spawns (that means you will need to learn how to defend and attack). You should decide who is going to be the “charger”. For this role you should use boosts to try and make first contact with the ball hopefully sending the ball shooting down the opposition’s end of the field. If you think that the enemy “charger” will beat you to the ball use a double jump and front flip to attempt to block the shot. Also a single jump to hit the ball on kickoff can be useful to prevent to much lift on the ball often resulting in a crossbar shot. As a charger you want to get the ball to the opposite end as quick as possible and try and hit the corners of the map as hard as possible. Hitting the corners will ensure the ball ends up in the center of the pitch giving a chance for your teammate to score.

The next role is the “defender” they should fall back to the colored goal zone and hold that position guarding and blocking shots and having a general overview of the game, giving information to your team mates. Whilst your defending you should be focused on picking up the 100% boosts as you will tend to have a bit of spare time, and will need these for out running attackers and flying blocks to prevent any lobs.

The final role is the “support” this player should be looking to run down the center of the pitch picking up any crosses or balls that get missed. As soon as the original charger gets in trouble you should swap roles allowing you to recompose yourself quickly and hopefully getting some more goals.

The final tip is to remember to pass lots, its football and you can make the ball travel across the pitch much quicker than you or your opponents. A few simple passes and you will be in a great position to take a shot!
