The "Observer" Spy Set
7 items
Description
"The power of matter manipulation and light distortion fueled by a mythical metal, conveniently strapped to your wrist. It's a godsend for any infiltrator! For when 'deep undercover' just isn't deep enough. When 'undetectable' would only blow your cover. When 'bullet-proof' turns you into a 'dead giveaway'.

...Just try not to think about what it might be doing to your atomic structure."

When I originally made my Observer Spy set, I filled just about every weapon slot, as well as a few misc items. Several people mentioned that the set could use a hat and a watch, but I was rather exhausted from the workload the set required at the time, so I never got around it. Now that I'm revisiting the set years later, I decided to go ahead and fill in the gaps.

This guy has been sitting in the idea folder for quite a while. The idea didn't come together until I had a name for it. I was originally going to name it something like "Infiltrator" or "Operator", but the current name just oozes cool in my opinion. The idea revolves around a watch that contains a miniature particle accelerator, which does.. uhh.. "magic science stuff" to the Spy's body, granting him the ability to walk through enemy teammates and projectiles. It also functions as a regular cloaking watch, and switches between modes depending on what disguise is applied.

I used the other watches as a basis for how to go about designing the look and feel. The original idea was a sort of pop-out "spy-techy" style gizmo in watch form. When the watch was active in its secondary mode, the "particle gizmo" would flip out of the watch and present itself to the user. I ended up scrapping it for something more practical. The original materials were also something more in the dulled silver market, similar to the stock watch. I felt it was too similar to stock, and moved more towards emulating a Rolex watch, with silver and gold lining. It is worth noting that, despite the specialized nature of the watch, the interior guts of the watch can be removed rather easily, should Valve want to use it without all the gizmos and doodads.

Finally, this item has an extensive number of bones. In true Spy-watch flare, I decided to do a bit of overkill in the detail department. The interior is designed to open up when the watch is activated in secondary mode, revealing the particle accelerator(the padlock thing), the cloaking device(the USB SpyTech thing), the Australium power source(the gold tube thing), and the clock components. The particle accelerator spins on its own, simulating a sort of "particles at light speed" effect, represented by a band of rainbow colors. The clock hands are split up into seconds, minutes, and hours, and are timed to simulate the actual match time. They "should" roughly(very roughly) simulate the current time since the match has begun. In theory, the watch should show the current match time, even if you joined midway. At least, that's how the model viewer and SFM handled it when I was testing. I did have an animated gif of these effects, but I can't get it to upload.

Despite my best efforts, I couldn't find a way to test this watch in-game. Much of its construction comes from observing the other watches and how they work in the model viewer. As far as I can tell, you cannot skin a watch. Perhaps there is no code in place to skin watches, or use some other method for overriding their assets, or they are hard-coded. Your guess is as good as mine at this point. I did make a few mock ups in SFM as to how they might look during play.

There will not be a mod/skin release for this item, don't bother asking. I will still release it to SFM.
