Hi and welcome to The Typing of the Dead: Workshop Guide.

This guide is intended to give you a quick overview of how to create and publish your own custom dictionaries for The Typing of the Dead: Overkill.

In order to create your own custom dictionary you will need:

• A text editor (Notepad for example or anything else that you like using which can save *.txt files - this is how you will provide the content of your dictionaries to the Workshop tool)
  
• You will need to own the game
  
• The Typing of the Dead: Workshop Tool which should be present in your Steam library under "Tools"

Go ahead and start the Workshop tool from your Steam library.




The main window of the TotD Workshop Tool has 2 main components:

• A list of your currently published Steam Workshop items for TotD: Overkill, if any.
  
• A row of buttons on the right allowing you to refresh the list of published items, to create new items and to edit existing items you may have already published.

This list will contain all items you have created and published on the Steam Workshop for the Typing of the Dead: Overkill. Each row of the list will show the item's name and its current status (whether it is public, private or visible only to your friends). Double-click on any of the items in the list to open up the item's page in the Steam Workshop, allowing you to further edit the item and even remove it from the Workshop altogether if you want.


This button allows you to refresh the list of workshop items you have published to the Steam Workshop.


Click this button to begin creating a new item in the Steam Workshop. This will open up a new window which will allow you to provide all the required information for your new Workshop item. For more details read the "Creating a New Dictionary" section.


This button allows you to edit the currently selected item from the list of items you have already published on the Steam Workshop. Select an item from the list and then click this button to begin editing it. For more details read the "Edit an Existing Workshop Item" section.


This opens up a help file that contains information similar to this guide.


At the bottom of the window there is a status bar which will show progress when creating new Workshop items or editing existing ones.

Use the 'New' button in the Main Window to begin creating a new Steam Workshop item for The Typing of the Dead: Overkill. This will open up a new window which will allow you to enter all the required information for creating your new item.



Note: You should ensure that you have agreed to the Workshop Terms of Service before attempting to publish any items on the Workshop. This can be done by clicking the link at the bottom of the New Item dialog.

The tool will automatically redirect you to agree to the Workshop Terms of Service if you attempt to publish an item without having agreed to the ToS before.


This is the file containing all the words and phrases that players will have to type in the game when they play with your Workshop dictionary enabled.
This needs to be a simple text file (*.txt) with each word and phrase written on a separate line:

Virtue
Ethics
People
Friends
Truth
Becoming good
Take refuge in theory
...


You can create this file with your favourite text editor before saving it and selecting it here.
The only thing to keep in mind is that only the following characters are supported in-game:

aAbBcCdDeEfFgGhHiIjJkKlLmMnNoOpPqQrRsStTuUvVwWxXyYzZ0)1!2\"3#4$5%6^7&8*9(-_=+ /?,<.>;:'@

Any other characters will be replaced in-game with ones that it can display.

This is the name of your Workshop item as it will appear in the Steam Workshop. By default this is set to the name of the text file you have selected as the 'Dictionary file'. Edit this if you would like your Workshop item to have a different name.


This needs to be a JPEG, PNG or GIF image file no larger than 1 MB in size.


Type in a description of your dictionary so that other players can get an idea what it contains. We suggest mentioning if your dictionary has a general topic that all words & phrases relate to, maybe the difficulty (for example the average word or phrase length), if it contains words from a specific language, etc.


Here you set the visibility of the item you are about to create.

• Public: anyone can view your dictionary in the Workshop and subscribe to it.
  
• Private: only you can view your dictionary in the Workshop for now.
  
• Friends Only: only you and your Steam friends can view your dictionary in the Workshop and subscribe to it.

Click the 'Publish' button once you are done setting everything up to create the dictionary in the Steam Workshop and begin uploading its files and info. A message box will detail errors if any are encountered during the upload process otherwise you will be returned to the Main Window. Watch the upload bar at the bottom of the window to check on the upload progress. If everything completes successfully the tool will open the item's webpage in the Workshop, allowing you to see how it looks and to subscribe to it in order to test it in the game.

There are 2 ways of editing an existing Workshop item that you have previously published to the Steam Workshop.


You can use the 'Edit' button on the Main Window to begin the edit process. This will open up a dialog similar to the one used when creating a new item with the only difference that you are not required to provide all the information again - you can use the checkboxes to select exactly what you want to change.



For example, you could change only the dictionary file by making sure the checkbox for 'Dictionary File' is checked and by providing a new text file. Or you could just edit the description. Anything that has not been selected and modified here will remain as it is already saved in the Steam Workshop.

Please read the Creating a New Dictionary section for more information on each field in this window.


There are certain actions that you can only take from the item's page on the Steam Workshop. For example if you want to completely delete the item from the Workshop you will have to go to its webpage on the Steam Workshop to do this.
In order to access the item's webpage double click on the item in the 'Your Workshop Items' list on the Main Window .

To view any custom dictionaries in the game go to the Workshop page, browse the content available and subscribe to the custom dictionaries you'd like to play in the game.

Once that is done, start The Typing of the Dead: Overkill and from its main menu navigate to 'Game Settings' and then 'DLC Dictionaries'. The items you have subscribed to will appear in the list of DLC, along with any ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DLC you may own.



Note: the Steam client treats downloading Workshop items the same as downloading game patches and updates so depending on how you have configured your download restrictions in the Steam client settings they might not get downloaded while the game is running. If after subscribing to a Workshop item you find that it does not appear in the game, please check you Library -> Downloads section in the Steam client to see if there are any pending downloads and maybe exit the game to allow the custom dictionary to be downloaded.

The Workshop dictionaries will be marked with the "CUSTOM" label.
