you can also use lanius to destroy virus and get rewads

I've never seen this way to pass this encounter before, I typically avoid
choosing the [ENGI CREW] option because the first time I lost a crew member I was like "Clearly that's a bad idea, let's not do that again!"

But if this is actually possible I will see if I can replicate it.

You can also use a lanius crewmember to... eat the virus and get a drone reactor booster.

There's actually another option for this one! When you first meet them, if you have hacking, it says
"(Improved Hacking) Reprogram the virus."
then it will repair you and upgrade a system (I got reactor), then the Engi give you an augment (I got Drone Reactor Booster). I took a couple of screenshots if you want them.
