Looking at the pictures provided here it is very clear that keeping the two sandblocks will slower the rival significantly.
If I find the motivation I will add this information at the weekend. Thanks for the tip!
I'd like to point out that there's a way to make the race a bit easier in the final part. Near the end of the guide, where it says "Downdash to break the sand blocks and shove the two stacked blocks to the left", it's actually better to NOT downdash, since this would break the sand blocks in the rival's path as well. The "Speed Dig Mode" works the same way for the rival, meaning he'll lose his speed if he hits those sand blocks, giving you some advantage. You still need to remove the sand blocking the two boxes in your path, but you can do that by stomping above and to the left of them (kinda hard to describe it without pictures, but it's two blocks to the right of a lamp on the floor, and you'll have to break the sand there before too).
