This episode deals with a nonconventional gamemode within Team Fortress 2 that consists entirely of simply killing opponents or “deathmatching.” This gamemode is known as Orange.

Orange is popular Team Fortress 2 map. It’s not just a map it’s a category of map. A sort of abstract concept. An adjective useful in describing servers and maps under an umbrella. Maps that share characteristics. Orange itself was the root of the idea of Orange maps. Hopefully that statement will make sense by the end of this video.

Starting at the beginning, a map called cp_orange was made. It was a wide open 5 control point map with numerous technical problems. Released still in the development stage the walls were plastered with orange and placeholder developer textures, hence the name: orange.

Over the years the map became inexplicably popular, spawning various alterations and versions of itself. More or less the edited and remixed maps continued in the original’s legacy of being subpar and borderline-broken. The most popular version being cp_orange_x3. Right now there are roughly 50 popular cp_orange variants being played.

There’s a sort of genera or grouping of maps that players play on and that servers run in a certain way that’s referred to as Orange. Commonly these maps and servers focus on the gameplay of deathmatching. They usually feature a casual and non-srs atmosphere and over-the-top gameplay mod. Mods such as 100% critical hits.

Some maps that aren’t remakes or edits of Orange are often grouped with Orange. Maps that don’t play well or have are perceived design faults that often leads gameplay to degenerating into deathmatching. Often these maps exist together as part of a server’s rotation, further straightening their associations with Orange and being awful.

There exists a sort of negative connotation for players who enjoy Orange maps. They’re looked down upon. These players are sited as not skilful, unintelligent, young children, and often users of hacks. Players believe Orange maps attract these kinds of player. These players are generalized, even if none of them fit any of these categories this is how they are seen.

And that’s basically Orange in a nutshell. A genera of underachiever maps in TF2. A place where normal gameplay consists of deathmatching.

Thanks for reading. Don't forget to like/fav if you did.

It's not really a game mode, just a normal server with Orange maps.
