I explored these a lot in later maps, trying to come up with something different.

did you unpublish it, then publish it again ?
if yes, this will always have the effect of treating your map as a new one.
you never need to unpublish a map, to update it.
just update the published version, in the editor.
then publish, & it will keep all previous comments.
the next time someone starts portal.
the updated version will appear in their list.
