Basic Info
Genre: Non-Combat Skill-based Platformer
Difficulty: Medium-Hard

You play as a silent, masked man whose job is to light lanterns. Who you are and why you do what you do is what you will discover in Shio.

There is no combat in Shio, your only enemy is the environment. Nearly everything will kill you in one touch. You can only do two things, run and jump. While that sounds simple enough, the architects of the towers you have to traverse have placed all sorts of obstacles in your path, such as, but not limited to, spikes, lava floors, fireball cannons and swinging pendulums. At certain points there is also gates which has to be opened by lighting certain lanterns. As if the tower itself was not enough to be in your way, the weather will also try to stop you, from sun-beam lasers to razor-leaf-carrying wind-canons.
There are 4 chapters and each chapter has roughly 30 levels and a different season. Each season determines what type of weather obstacles are present in each level. The levels gets gradually harder as you progress through each level in chapter. Some levels can be completed in the matter of seconds, while some of the later levels might take you several minutes to complete, after you have trial-and-error'ed your way through it.

The narrative is delivered through interactions with characters you meet on your journey through the different towers.

Shio has a 2D painting-like art-style and is well optimized, so it will probably run on slightly older machines.

The game has a mix between eastern-inspired combat music and relaxing zen-like music.

Shio has nearly infinite replayability, as you can speed run each level, competing against a character in the game called "old friend", who has some fairly good times. Even if you do not try to speed run Shio, you will challenge yourself to get through all the levels to discover who you, the silent, masked man, are and why you do what you do. The game is truly challenging, especially when you get further into the game. The game can be frustratingly hard at times, but that only drives you to perfect your timing and skills to get past it, even if it is only by the skin of your teeth with 0.1 second from death.

As someone who has watched Semei play this game many times on Twitch I agree with everything he has written. Great review.
