Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is the new game by the creator of QWOP. Inspired by Sexy Hiking, the 2002 B-game, the challenge is to overcome a mountain of seemingly random objects equipped with a hammer only.

As simple as this sounds the game is not easy. It requires a very precise control of the mouse and a lot of training. Simply repeating actions until success, doing things faster or spending more time doesn't lead to progress in the game. Only improving this small but mighty set of skills can get you to new heights. But careful, the danger of falling down is always present. You can even fall from almost the end of the game back to the very beginning of the game. Endless struggle and terrible setbacks are an essential part of the experience.

This, along with the audio commentary by the developer featuring background info about the creation of the game and considerations about game design and our modern media culture in general make Getting Over It more than game: it's actually a study on difficulty in games, various aspects of game design such as challenges and rewards, and ultimately the experience of terrible setbacks and getting over them. And it's a masterpiece.

The fact that the game is very hard but not too hard to complete and that the granular difficulty in detail actually makes the gameplay does suggest that Getting Over It is very well-designed. It's absolutely worth a try and worth the money it costs on Steam. Try playing it in the evening, with a glass of wine, for relaxtion, approach it like zen gardening, and DO NOT RIDE SNAKE ;)

P.S.: You should never give up but if you do you can see the rest of the game in my first complete playthrough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnCtRm1Kug4
