"Oh let me see your beauty when the witnesses are gone
Let me feel you moving like they do in Babylon
Show me slowly what I only know the limits of
Dance me to the end of love" *

A thrilling, powerful yet dreadful business love is, when its whole content and capability is considered. It gives birth to all kind of miracles like affection, sympathy, passion, anger and even redemption. Yet I'm not penning this review to inform you about the package love may drop on any sane person to portray a new psyche. I just wished to take a moment and celebrate the creator of this visual novel for her in-depth and through understanding of the concept, with all its bliss and dread all the same. It is not love letters, bright sunshine and butterflies all the time. It grows, it consumes, it hurts... and that lecherous winged Roman god, Cupid would keep smiling all the same.

In 1600s France, we are invited to follow Rosa, a beautiful yet troubled young orphan, led by the sound of her mother in her head. She'll soon discover the whole content there to be for love, gain a family, lose a friend and decide the fate of the one she loves/hates the most. Any more specific storyline description would present complete spoilers, thus, I'll avoid telling you more of the story. It should suffice to warn you that this game is most assuredly +18, dealing with both explicit and gruesome topics like abuse, self-mutilation, mental instability, suggested incest and detailed sexual narrative once or twice. If you feel like you might be offended or this might simply not be your cup of tea, pick something else.

Cupid is an astonishing visual novel in both its thematic choice and narrative, which surprises me even more that it’s a freeware. The concept is slightly influenced by Roman mythology, with a darker approach to the subject compared to Renaissance idealism. There is a certain elegance in its narrative display, a hint of literary education and eloquence, and a philosophical undertone for the concept of love and human nature itself. There are sharp twists in the story masterfully presented that will keep you on your toes: from light-hearted to shocking, from fleetingly beautiful to despicably banal without a warning. All characters involved are presented with genuine depth and they harbor many facets of the human soul. They are anything but one dimensional or stereotypical. All five different endings of the visual novel rely on another concept that might born out of love; most gruesome, some heartbreaking... all bitter as the end of any love.

Display is more than appealing, with lots of beautiful CGs, elegant character designs and fitting artwork. The soundtrack brought together from a wide selection - from classic to romantic baroque, from Mediterranean to dark wave - is another proof that labor was put into this work. The game bears many choice option which may alter the ending and takes 7-8 hours if you are to go for all ending.

Take one evening, and let your heart whimper under the brilliant narrative. Take the crushing role of Rosa's mother - the voice within her head - to either lead her into wild retribution or mending compassion. You'll be astonished by the end.

Oh, the feelings that surrounds and covers me all without and within whenever I am reminded by Leonard Cohen - one of my most beloved poetic musicians and lyricists.

You really do know how to frame your otherwise very well written reviews to an effect that deepens them even further, dear sister. :)

When the time comes I will look out for your review of Doki Doki, it's definitely an experience that stays with you and isn't easily shaken off.

Thank you very much. I am yet to play Doki Doki, but some other friend recently suggested it too. I'll soon check :)

Fascinatingly precise review of a Baroque VN that at one stage had me wondering was Rosa schizophrenic or had she developed a disorder akin to Norman Bates? Either way it is a hauntingly dark, emotionally vampiric and immaculate in its exploration of love, passion and shock appeal.

Faudraline, have you experienced Doki Doki Literature Club? Would be interesting to read your experience of that VN.

No need to apologize at all. If anything, you honor me in your belief for my ability, my friend. I am lucky to have you in my friends list, that's one thing sure.

I should have known that you would be the type of accomplished individual who would not be content with just nurturing an innate talent, but who aspires instead to blossom into a veritable garden of self-achievement and personal accomplishments. My apologies for ever doubting your tenacity, Faudraline. You have my full respect for all that you have accomplished, as well as my belief in the inevitable success of all your future plans. It was not my intent either to demean the import of your reviews, rather the opposite. Most reviews I read from others tend to come across like a list of ingredients, while you present the entire finished product with all its sensory pleasing nuances. I must admit, I'm sure more than a few of us would be curious to see some of your other written works. Judging from your sublime writing style, your poetry must be breathtaking. Keep up the superb work my friend. :100:

Oh, thank you! I really appreciate your kind words, Reaper ^_^ I already work as a translator in a publishing house and an academic advisor for uni. I hope to get my doctorate and stay at college to teach literature one day :) Writing these reviews is kind of a hobby for me, where I can write on about personal opinions and still work on my ability to express ideas in written format. Plus, I feel that my gaming comes around to be at least some use to someone who'd be interested in the experience. Ofcourse, I have personal works - like old poems, countless essay and a draft for a novella - at this point, but my writing is mostly academic. Who knows, maybe I'd actually publish something someday soon :)

At the risk of coming across as sycophantic, have you ever considered writing on a professional level Faudraline? You have such a delightful way with words and the conveyance of emotion, that as immensely talented as I am sure you naturally are, I can't help but feel that your innate talent to write on such a level beyond the ability of most individuals would serve you well should you ever decide to become an established author. From my perspective, it's like witnessing a talented composer who seems content to write advertisement jingles instead. I mean no disrespect here my friend :PinkContent:, it's obviously not my place to advise someone how they should best live their life. I would just hate to see you limit your own talents to just writing (well received, excellent) Steam reviews.
